King-Smith Trio next gen jazz

The King-Smith Trio is a group of young musicians who share a passion for jazz and swing music. Taking inspiration from Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, this up and coming young trio bring your favourite jazz standards and are sure to bring a smile to your face. Come out for a swingin’ evening!
Matt King-Smith is one of Toronto’s finest young Trumpet players. A recent graduate from Humber College, he has quickly established himself as a respected performer in the city’s music scene. While at Humber, Matt had the opportunity to study with some of Canada’s finest jazz and commercial musicians; Brian O’Kane, Alistar Kay, Shelly Berger and Andy Ballantyne, to name a few. During his time there he played lead trumpet in the Studio Jazz Big Band, led by Mark Promane. As well as The Groove Merchants, a high level funk band led by Canadian drum icon Mark Kelso. He was honoured to received the prestigious Don Johnson memorial award (2018), and the Al Kay Brass Excellency award (2019).
As an active member in the freelance community, Matt’s playing has taken him to such venues as Roy Thompson Hall, The Rex Hotel and the Jazz Bistro. You can find him leading his own trio in intimate venues around the city, or playing with many different jazz bands, funk bands and brass bands around the GTA and other Southern Ontario areas.
