ABOUT THE ARTISTS

At the young age of twenty-four, Virginia McDonald has already established herself as a respected and sought after musician in the Toronto jazz scene; she has performed extensively as both a leader and sidewoman at several venues across the city, including Koerner Hall, The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, The Jazz Bistro, The Rex Hotel Jazz & Blues Bar, Poetry Jazz Cafe, and has performed in several Canadian festivals including the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, the Beaches International Jazz Festival, the Kensington Market Jazz Festival, and the Cape Breton Jazz Festival.

She is currently in attendance at Humber College and is slated to receive her Bachelor of Music by the summer of 2019. While in attendance at Humber, she received the prestigious Yamaha Music Canada scholarship for outstanding musical performance in both 2018 and 2019. In 2018, she received a full scholarship to take part in an exclusive five-week workshop at Berklee College of Music with the Grammy Award-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington.

Virginia has worked with many Toronto-based musicians including Kirk MacDonald, Pat LaBarbera, Terry Clarke, Lorne Lofsky, Neil Swainson, Nancy Walker, Kieran Overs, Bruce Cassidy, Richard Whiteman, and David Occhipinti.

She’s had the opportunity to work internationally in Europe, at well-known jazz clubs such as Bogui Jazz, Jimmy Glass Jazz Bar, and Refugio Jazz, and has had the chance to share the stage with many renowned jazz musicians such as Geoffrey Keezer, Dick Oatts, Rich Perry, Adam Nussbaum, Peter Bernstein, and Harold Mabern.

At this point in her career, Virginia is now focusing on composing and performing her own music. Her debut album is set to be released in 2019 and is comprised of original compositions written for a jazz quintet.

Known for his relaxed feel and commanding sound, Lucian Gray is a virtuosic young guitarist with a deep respect for the jazz tradition.

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Lucian Gray was born into a musical family. His father is one of Canada’s foremost trumpet players, and his mother the head of her own music school. He started playing the piano at the age of 4.

Upon entering high school, Lucian decided to pick up the guitar and played in various rock and fusion groups throughout his teens. After being introduced to the music of Wes Montgomery, he decided he wanted to be a jazz guitarist.

In 2008, Lucian was awarded the Slaight Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship. He graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor’s Degree of Music Performance. During his time at Berklee, Lucian studied with guitar guru Mick Goodrick.

In 2009, Lucian was awarded the Rising Young Star at the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival.

In 2015, Lucian entered the first Wes Montgomery International Jazz Guitar Competition and was one of five finalists selected to perform at the culminating concert of the competition.

Lucian is currently active in the Toronto jazz scene, performing with his own group and as a sideman, as well as teaching privately.

July 29

A vibrant new mentorship programme for young composers and performers, three selected early-career Canadian composers are each writing a new work for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion and are working with composition mentors to fine tune their creations. Six selected early-career performers will then work and learn from the Continuum core ensemble to prepare and perform the new compositions, as well as two pieces by composition mentors Linda Catlin Smith and Anthony Tan.

BIGLAKE is thrilled to present a concert featuring the results of this dynamic mentorship programme. We welcome you to hear these freshly created compositions, (they will be only a few months old!), performed by the next generation of Canadian performers. The HATCH ensemble will be conducted by Kelly Lin, participant in the Women In Musical Leadership program. New music can’t get much newer than this!
